All good relationships need quality time, intentionality, and a commitment – and no, we aren’t talking about romantic relationships, we’re talking about building lasting partnerships that support you in achieving your environmental goals, of course!

First, remember that relationships are an investment, accruing interest over time, and NOT the result of a single outreach effort. Cultivating strong relationships means dedicating focused time towards the people or organization you hope to partner with. Be responsive by being engaged in the issues your partners care about, as well as being timely in your interactions with them. Listen closely to what your audiences are saying, finding alignment with your own strategic goals.

Relationships are built on shared experiences and two-way streets. The latter means that if you want partners to get more engaged in your work, try getting more engaged in theirs. Consider how you can do more to support those with whom you want to engage. Showing up for your community includes attending their events to learn from them and being vocal about how your work advances their goals.

Once you see how your goals and visions for the future align, engage audiences and partners and seek out opportunities for collaboration. Every organization has its own strengths and weaknesses. Look for opportunities to leverage your strengths to help your partnership grow. This will look different for different relationships. Some don’t have the capacity or funding, others don’t have the expertise. Try to leverage your unique skills and strengths to support each other!

When you can develop a track record of following through and consistently showing up for others you can develop a powerful relationship that will reward you both in the long run.
