Coastal ocean acidification is a complex problem and it has serious implications for the lives and livelihoods of coastal communities. However, trying to communicate the causes of and impacts from an intangible issue is difficult. We created a video series that combines interviews with scientists and coastal stakeholders, engaging graphics, and a humorous host to help make the topic more approachable and understandable.

Green Fin Studio was hired by the Mid-Atlantic Coastal Acidification Network (MACAN) to create a series of educational videos on coastal ocean acidification. The target audience for the videos ranged from elementary to high school students. The causes of ocean acidification are complex and the impacts are varied. We combined expert and stakeholder interviews with motion graphics and a little humor to create a video series that connects with a broad spectrum of students.

The videos featured interviews with researchers, oyster growers, commercial fishermen, and environmental managers. For the introductory video, we worked with a local actor to be the “host” and give the video a fun, “Bill Nye the Science Guy” feel. We also developed custom graphics and animations which are featured in several of the videos. Interviews and b-roll were captured at various locations in New York, New Jersey, Maryland, and Virginia. Spanish closed caption versions are available for each video.

In two years, the video series amassed over 3,000 views.
